What to Expect at a Corset Fitting in Old Town Alexandria

Steel boned corsets are one of those things that are so much better tried on in person, and we love walking people through the process! If you've been searching for a corset shop in Alexandria VA or wondering where to get fitted for a corset near Washington DC, here's what to know before you come see us on King Street

First, What to Wear to Shop for Corsets

Skip anything with a bulky waistband. Leggings or bottoms with a flush waistband are a great call. Wear two separate pieces, a top and a bottom, instead of a one-piece dress or jumpsuit. This way you can try corsets on over your bottoms and experiment with underbusts and overbusts without being fully undressed between every style.

  • A thin tank top underneath the corset is the most comfortable option too — it gives your skin a little barrier without adding bulk.
  • For underbust corsets, a well-fitting non-underwire bra helps you visualize the look.
  • For overbust corsets, we recommend taking your bra off completely so you can see how the corset fits your body most accurately.

Plan to Give Yourself Some Time

A proper fitting takes 30 minutes or more. We'll measure you, then lace you in and out of a few different styles so you can feel the differences between them. If you can, come on a weekday rather than a Saturday. Weekends get busy, and a quieter afternoon means more one-on-one time with our staff and a more personalized fitting.

There's a Corset for Everybody, But Not Every Corset Fits Every Body

Hip curve, torso length, and the overall silhouette of a corset all affect how it sits on you, and those things vary a lot from body to body. What looks incredible on one person might hit wrong on someone else — not because of size, but because of the shape of the body you're asking steel boning to conform to. Corsets are flexible in sizing, but there are real limits based on construction. This is exactly why we walk you through the fit process in person: to help you find the fit you want, in the most comfortable cut for your body.

You'll know it's the right one when you start doing the corset shimmy in the mirror. It's a full-body transformation that comes from feeling amazing when you look at yourself. Ask anyone who's been fitted for a corset — the wide eyes, the hands running up and down a newly defined waist, and a slightly surprised but very excited shimmy are the sign of a sure winner.

Our Size Range

We carry steel boned corsets in closed sizes 20 to 44, making us one of the more size-inclusive corset stores near Alexandria. Since a corset is meant to reduce your natural waist rather than match it exactly, there's some math involved. At smaller sizes we generally plan for about 4 inches of reduction, so if you have a 24-inch natural waist, we'll start you in a size 20. At larger sizes there's more soft tissue to compress, so reduction can comfortably stretch closer to 6 inches or more. It isn't an exact science, which is why trying on a few styles in a few different sizes gives you the most accurate information. Practically speaking, our corsets fit natural waists from roughly 24 inches up to about 50 inches — corsets for every body.

Costume Season and the Renn Faire

If you're building a look for the Maryland Renaissance Festival or gearing up for sexy-spooky costume season, come in early. This is one of our busiest stretches for Renn Faire and Halloween corset fittings. A corset that's going to be laced tight for hours of walking, dancing, and standing in the sun deserves a proper fitting. We'll help you find something that looks the part and that you can actually move and breathe in all day. Because breathing is not optional.

  • Will my corset show under a fitted top or dress?
  • Do I need a specific bra, or does the corset handle that on its own?
